Filament Blobs Explained: What Causes Them, How to Prevent Them, and Why They Aren’t Covered Under Warranty
One of the most frustrating failures in 3D printing is the dreaded “filament blob”, sometimes also referred to as the “blob of death”.
This happens when a print comes loose from the build plate during printing, but the printer continues extruding filament. Instead of building the model correctly, molten plastic accumulates around the nozzle, hotend, and print head, eventually forming a hardened mass that can damage multiple components.
In some cases, the damage is minor and easily cleaned away. In more severe situations, the blob can destroy fans, thermistors, heaters, wiring, ducts, covers, and even entire toolhead assemblies.
