Even with modern build plates, auto bed levelling, and well-tuned profiles, first-layer failures are still one of the most common causes of failed prints. Bed adhesives aren’t a workaround for bad settings — they’re a simple, inexpensive way to improve consistency, reduce warping, and make prints more reliable across a wide range of materials.
What Are 3D Printer Bed Adhesives?
Bed adhesives are products applied to the build surface before printing to improve how the first layer interacts with the bed. Depending on the material and temperature, they can either increase adhesion or act as a controlled interface layer that prevents parts from bonding too aggressively.
Unlike permanent surface treatments, bed adhesives are designed to be temporary, repeatable, and easy to clean. When used correctly, they help stabilise prints during heating and release cleanly once the bed cools.
How Bed Adhesives Actually Work
Bed adhesives work by modifying the surface energy of the build plate. At printing temperature, this helps molten filament wet the surface evenly, improving contact and reducing the chance of corners lifting or parts shifting mid-print.

Which Filaments Benefit Most from Bed Adhesives?
PLA
PLA generally sticks well, but adhesives can improve consistency on large prints and help with uneven build plates. Almost all adhesives perform very well with PLA.
PET-G
PET-G can bond too aggressively to PEI or glass. Adhesives act as a release layer, protecting the build surface while maintaining strong first-layer hold.
ABS / ASA
Both materials benefit significantly from bed adhesive, especially on larger prints. Adhesives help combat edge lift and improve success rates in open or semi-enclosed machines.
Nylon (PA) / PC
Highly recommended. These materials are sensitive to warping and benefit greatly from adhesives designed to handle higher temperatures and controlled release.
